CREW

H. Nelson Tracey
Writer/Director/Producer

H. Nelson Tracey started making movies after receiving a video camera for his 12th birthday and hasn’t stopped in the two decades since. He has directed narrative and documentary short films including “Picture Jasper,” “Conspiracy Party,” and “Spare the Kid.”

As an editor and assistant editor, he has worked on projects including “Ski Bum: The Warren Miller Story,” Netflix’s “Eat the Rich” and Hulu’s “Stolen Youth.” In 2019, after screening “Picture Jasper” at the Eastern Oregon Film Festival in La Grande, Oregon, Tracey was invited to help develop the festival’s emerging Filmmaker Residency program to bring production to the rural region.

He participated as one of six inaugural participants in the program in May 2021. This location later became the setting for “Breakup Season,” which was shot over three weeks in La Grande in February 2023. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Tracey graduated from Chapman University with a BFA in Film Production. “Breakup Season” is his debut feature film.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

A first breakup is a monumental life experience of bereavement. I had not seen films that covered an early 20s breakup in the way I knew most people (including myself) experienced it - as an essential step in the modern coming of age story. I aimed to cover this event in an earnest way that can at once be personal and universal.  I wanted to depict this with sincerity: there’s humor, yes, but ultimately it’s grounded in a sense of realism not often seen in holiday fare. This authenticity guided me to tell something both universal and hyper specific which could spark conversations about breakups as well as about the family dynamics that can get entangled with them.

Breakup Season is my first feature film. I have been preparing for my entire life to direct movies, and this represents the culmination of all that effort to do it any way possible. It was built by a community: Every single person - from cast, to producers, to crew - put their heart into this movie and the final result is an example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. I couldn’t be prouder of the final result, and I cannot wait for audiences around the country to see this film, and spark their own conversations about breakups, family, and the lessons learned along the way.
